Yep, outside the box and lots of fun!

October 10th, 2018 Okay peeps it's time for "WTAF Wednesday!" One of my more enjoyable things to do on days off while touring is ... you guessed it, record shopping. It's always great to do a little exploring in the cities around the world and find a hidden gem or two on a day off. Isn't that right Carly Scovill? So, quite a while back I started having some fun with it and one of the things I'm always on the lookout for are live vinyl releases from bands that I know absolutely nothing about. The more obscure the better. Sometimes they'll be local bands that were successful enough to press their own live release and sell them. Sometimes they'll be a bit more established bands that achieved some success. In either case, what you find is always surprising and fun because you go into it with no expectations. Now I'm not going to lie, some of them are down right awful. But you know what? There can be a lot of charm in a band's "awfulness". And what did that enjoyment just cost you? Anywhere from $1.00-$3.00. That's right, considerably less than that cup of coffee you're drinking while you scour the bargain bins. So in that exploratory spirit may I present to you "Toons" live at The Great American Music Hall circa 1980. Now, there is a lot of "quirk" in this record. You can often tell what you're buying in the titles of songs like "Give Us A Recording Contract" and "Roast Chicken Faces". But there's also a lot of talent here, especially vocally. There's some really well put together harmonies along with some outside the box arranging. I'm wondering if they might have been based in San Francisco, given where they recorded the record? Feel free to share info about them if you know their history. Alright, it's time for that second cup of $6.00 coffee, and an $8.00 muffin.
