Steppenwolf Live

Updated: Apr 1, 2019

One of the finest and longest lasting bands of the era

"There was just something about this band, their songs, their sound and especially John Kay’s voice. I don’t know. I just believed him."

October 15th, Sunday. It’s Monday! Okay enough with that excitement … I mean, it’s Monday … I need a little “somethin-somethin” to get my juices flowing! On this edition of the “LVL” — yep, I have an acronym now — I’m going back to a live vinyl staple for me as a youngster. This is the original release of Steppenwolf Live and frankly I've nearly worn this copy out. There was just something about this band, their songs, their sound and especially John Kay’s voice. I don’t know. I just believed him. He was authentic to my ears. Still is.

I don’t have much, if any, info on this album or recordings. The inner sleeve is, well, “stark” would be an accurate description. 5 portraits of the band, 3 live performance shots and 3 credits; Produced by Gabriel Mekler, Engineered by Ray Thompson, Photography & Design by Tom Gundelfinger followed by one sentence - “RECORDED LIVE AT VARIOUS CONCERTS DURING EARLY 1970”

Well, okay then. At any rate, if you’re a Steppenwolf fan — and I was and am — this one is IN your collection. A total marker of time.
